The Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) - Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM), with the leadership of Dr. Benedict Edward Valdez, is a major leap in healthcare service. Reinforcing this government’s commitment to Emergency Medicine, the department was officially launched in 2016 with the support of SPMC’s Medical Center Chief, Dr. Leopoldo Vega. In the past 2 years, SPMC-DEM has been steadfast in the pursuit of excellence in the field of Emergency Medicine.
In 2017, it was accredited by the Philippine College of Emergency Medicine as a training program, which aims to train competent EMS personnel and promote training and education in collaboration with the Davao Central 911–Emergency Medical Services. In the same year, the department conducted various collaborative events. The DEM together with the SPMC Hospital Emergency Management Bureau and Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, joined the city-wide disaster drill last July 2017. The department also conducted the first Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support course in Mindanao last December 2017. The training of both local EMTs and EM physicians was done in collaboration with the NAEMT (National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians), Davao Central 911 EMS, and Jones and Bartlett Learning. SPMC-DEM also hosted the first World Interactive Network Focused On Critical Ultrasound Course in Mindanao on March 2016. It also had its first Post Graduate Course in 2017 entitled: “Ang Bag-ong Sinugdanan” at the Ritz Hotel, Garden Oases, Davao City.
The department also conducted a series of Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Basic Life Support courses for different hospital personnel. Residents participated in case presentations both international and local conferences. The case report of Dr. Hanna Taya entitled As the Dust Settles: A Case Report of an Emergency Department’s Response to the Roxas Night Market Bombing Mass Casualty Incident was accepted for oral presentation at the 9th Asian Conference on Emergency Medicine last November 2017 in Antalya, Turkey.
In 2018, the department spearheaded the medical planning and direction in the Alveo’s Ironman 70.3-mile Triathlon last March 25. On April 17, 2018, during the recent Philippine College of Emergency Medicine Convention held in the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel, Dr. Arnikka Rubia won third place in the solo category of the first Interhospital Quiz Bee of the Association of Residents in Emergency Medicine. She also won second place in the group category of the same quiz bee together with Dr Christian John Fernandez and Dr Arthur Salvador. Dr. Roze Reyes-Mauro’s paper Multiple Burn Casualties in a Pre-hospital Trauma System was awarded 3rd place in the Interesting Case Poster Presentation of the same event.
Having won the bid back in 2016 in Seoul, Korea, the SPMC-DEM will host the 5th Asian EMS conference - EMS Asia 2018. The conference will be held on June 17 - 19, 2018 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City. With this year’s theme, “Towards Synergy in Emergency Care,” the highly regarded convention will highlight the overall improvement of health emergency outcomes and emergency medical services in Asia. The prestigious conference is organized annually by the Asian Association for Emergency Medical Services (AAEMS). The convention is expected to accommodate at least a thousand local and international delegates. The event will also award various individuals and institutions that have greatly contributed to the development and progress of emergency medical services in Asia. Pre-convention workshops will be conducted, which include, point-of-care ultrasound in pre-hospital care, prehospital trauma life support, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest dispatcher’s workshop, medical direction workshop, mass casualty incident, incident command system management and triage workshop, Asian excellence in prehospital care workshop, and water and wilderness rescue workshop.
