The Department of Surgery was established in 1981. It has a 5-year residency training program in the field of General Surgery, accredited by the Philippine College of Surgeons through the proposed establishment of Mindanao Integrated Surgical Residency Training Program (MISRTP). Four subspecialty programs include Colon & Rectal Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Uro Surgery, and Reconstructive & Plastic Surgery.

The MISRTP is committed to the training of resident physicians in General Surgery for the delivery of quality surgical care that shall be comprehensive and responsive to the health needs of the people in Mindanao, including research, continuing education, preventive and rehabilitative care.

By 2005 and onwards, the MISRTP envisions to integrate all interested and capable tertiary hospitals in Mindanao into one common residency program for General Surgery. The MISRTP also envisions to produce board certified General Surgeons who shall dedicate their service to the disadvantaged regions of Mindanao.
