The Department of Surgery was established in 1981. Initially, the General Surgery Training Program was under a consortium (Mindanao Integrated Surgical Residency Training Program) with the Davao Regional Medical Center and was awarded level II accreditation by the Philippine Society of General Surgeons (PSGS). In 2021, PSGS approved the SPMC Department of Surgery’s application as a stand alone General Surgery Residency Training Program with level I accreditation. It has a 5-year residency training program and also offers fellowship training in the following accredited subspecialties: Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, Colon & Rectal Surgery, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and Trauma and Critical Care Surgery. Currently, applying for accreditation is the fellowship training in Thoracic Surgery.

Mission

The Southern Philippines Medical Center Department of Surgery is committed to the training of resident physicians in General Surgery for the delivery of quality surgical care including research, continuing education, preventive and rehabilitative health care, that shall be comprehensive and responsive to the health needs of the people of Mindanao.
